The College Advisement office is focused on guiding students through the college selection process. To begin the process, we provide a handbook to each student in grades 11 and 12. Beginning in the junior year, students are eligible for the SAT prep course. Students are given the opportunity to talk with the college representatives who visit the school. In addition, families and students may set up appointments to speak with Mrs. Davis, the college advisor at any time.
The College Advisor offers her support and experience to ensure LCA students and parents are well versed in the nuances of the college process. While stress sometimes accompanies the process, we are committed to shaping the experience into an opportunity for growth for all parties involved. It is a privilege to work with such a dynamic and vibrant group of students, and to help them identify college matches that will inspire them to reach their fullest potential.
College Information for 11th and 12th Grade Students and Parents
Juniors and seniors will find college planning information in LCA's College Planning and College Admissions Handbooks. Included are planning calendars, a list of college fair dates and locations, SAT and ACT strategies, campus visit suggestions, and college applications and financial aid helps. Students may obtain a copy of the handbook from Mrs. Davis.
College Information for 9th and 10th Grade Students and Parents
Students have a fresh start in the 9th grade. Their high school courses and grades in grades 9-12 will form the transcript sent to colleges. College admission is based most strongly on a student's high school grades and the rigor or difficulty of the courses they have taken, so students are encouraged to put the necessary effort into their schoolwork.
The time to visit and apply to college may seem far away, but everything a student does (grades, activities, travel, job, and accomplishments) in grades 9-12 will be part of that application process. College and scholarship applications also often request information about a student's extracurricular activities in grades 9-12. Parents can help students keep a record of all honors and awards, activities including sports and clubs, community service, church activities, travel, hobbies, jobs, camps, courses, and anything else that sets the student apart. It is also important to note any leadership positions. This information should be recorded in the Student Profile notebook.
It is helpful to talk about college plans and visit colleges whenever possible. Junior and senior parents receive an LCA College Planning Handbook with information about SAT/ACT testing, campus visits, choosing a college, and financial aid. This handbook is available for 9th and 10th graders upon request from Mrs. Davis.
