Alumnus Feature || Taurrya Owens

We love watching our alumni thrive in the seasons of life God calls them to after graduation. Hear from Taurrya Owens about her journey attending Alabama to become an athletic trainer.

My name is Taurrya “T” Owens, and I graduated from LCA with the class of 2018. I am currently a senior at the University of Alabama studying to be an athletic trainer in their professional program.

In this program, I have had the opportunity to work with some of the best collegiate athletes in the country. During my time as an athletic training student, I have had the opportunity to work with Men’s Basketball, Women’s Volleyball, Women’s Softball, and most recently the Alabama Crimson Tide Football team.

It is a daily grind no matter where you go. At Alabama, we are very fortunate to have a lot of the luxuries of treatment machines, doctors, and just an overall great relationship with outside medical providers that help us make sure our athletes are playing at their best. I was able to collaborate with doctors in the treatment of our athletes to make sure they got back as soon and safely as possible.

I think my favorite site I experienced was Women’s Softball. The environment, the team, and the staff were absolutely incredible and made me love coming to work every day. I would say my most memorable moment was going postseason with the football team this past fall. Winning the SEC championship and being able to go to the National Championship in Indianapolis was a treasure. When you win with the team, it really feels like an entire staff-included win. I specifically worked with the Offensive Line, and when we won, I can remember going up to one of my favorite guys and just going wild together. I made snow angels in the confetti because I felt like I was a SEC champion too.

That semester of college was really hard, so being able to see it all go into fruition made it all worth it. God knew all the trials and tribulations I needed to go through in order to see the bigger picture and truly understand why I love athletic training. I will forever be grateful for the things the Lord puts me through to understand myself better.

When I’m not working with athletes, I participate in Alabama’s Women’s Rugby Club, which has given me some of the best friends and times I have ever had. After graduation, I plan to get my masters in sports management at the University of New Haven.

I believe attending LCA prepared me academically for what I would experience entering college. Because of the college credit I was able to receive in high school, I was able to walk into college as a sophomore, not having to take any entry level general education classes.

As an alumni looking back on my years at LCA, I want to tell the current seniors not to limit yourselves. It may seem scary, but once you go outside of your comfort zone, it can open a door of experiences you would never imagine!
