Robert Parks Honored as LCA’s 2019-2020 Star Student

This evening, the Walton County Chamber of Commerce honored both Robert Parks and his chosen teacher, Tonya Corrente, as LCA’s 2020 STAR Student and Teacher. To qualify for this honor, a high school senior must be in the top ten percent or top ten students in his or her class based on GPA and earn the highest SAT score by the end of the November test date.

Erika Lambert named GISA Teacher of the Year

In the spring of 2019, the process began to select the Teacher of the Year for the Georgia Independent School Association.  All 164 GISA schools were invited to nominate candidates in the lower school, middle school, and upper school categories.  The Head of School, along with other school personnel, submitted letters of recommendation, and the nominees were asked to write an essay on the topic, “What Teaching Means to Me.”  After a review of the nominees, the finalists participated in an interview process, and the winners were announced at the GISA Annual Conference on November 4, 2019.

Loganville Christian School has the distinct privilege of being home to the lower school Teacher of the Year for 2019, Mrs. Erika Lambert.  Now in her 16th year of teaching (11 at LCA), the number of students whose lives she has influenced is great. “It is an honor to be recognized as Teacher of the Year.  I am thankful that God called me to teach and for allowing me to work with countless students, parents, and educators over the years," says Erika. Erika is an Upper Elementary Lead Teacher and currently a 5th grade homeroom teacher while teaching reading and vocabulary to 4th and 5th grade students. She also teaches in Journey, LCA’s lower school gifted program, is a tutor in LCA’s Barton program, and tutors other students in math and reading.

Erika loves music and singing. She is a member of the LCA Worship Band and leads worship during US Chapel, faculty and staff meetings, and family worship nights. She assists with the lower school Christmas production by working with the soloists and ensembles to help prepare them for their performance.

Exciting Progression to Middle School

Utilizing communication, collaboration, problem solving, and building relationships all while learning content, Loganville Christian Academy’s goal is to challenge students to reach their full potential in every area of their lives. The administration and teachers at LCA are intentional when it comes to learning objectives for the students and how to best accomplish them. Outlined here are several examples of ways that LCA prepares students beyond the traditional textbook methods.

Senior Projects Serve as Capstone

Senior projects are an opportunity for LCA seniors to explore an interest area in order to gain further insight into the area as a potential hobby or career. Students shadow a mentor in the area of interest and learn what it takes to be successful within the chosen field. Mr. Mark Davis oversees the projects and said, “This year students examined many different areas from agriculture, woodworking, various medical fields, advertising, the legal profession, and many, many others. The students presented their findings to a panel that consists of LCA administration and staff.”

Early Childhood Education Program

Throughout the school year, the high school ECE students develop an understanding of the responsibilities of a classroom teacher while observing a teacher in action. This hands-on experience is similar to an internship, allowing students to explore career options prior to declaring their college majors. LCA currently has eleven US students participating in the ECE program, which began in the Fall of 2010.

Authentic Learning in MS Electives

This year at Loganville Christian Academy, we have prioritized authentic learning experiences in our middle school elective courses. In addition to offering new courses in technology, engineering, art, agriculture, and financial literacy, we have had to rethink how we evaluate students when their learning is grounded in hands-on and project-based experiences. This has led us to prioritize specific learning skills that we want our students to practice and master in these courses.

Diligence for Parents in the Digital Age

Creativity + Collaboration = Poetry Cafe

Our LCA third graders hosted their annual poetry cafe on Valentine’s Day of this year. The cafe culminates the hard work the students have put in writing poetry since the beginning of the school year. In preparation, the students read and studied different types of poetry styles and elements with Mrs. Cote and Mrs. Echols. They were each able to write and publish more than ten different original poems that they collected in their notebooks.
